Report to Albany on the LEAD Program: One-Year Anniversary

In April 2016, the City of Albany, NY implemented its Law Enforcement Assisted Diversion (LEAD) Program—an initiative that was first piloted in Seattle/King County, Washington in 2011—to help address the city’s public safety and public health concerns. This report released by the Katal Center for Health, Equity, and Justice details the early positive results and challenges Albany has faced during the first year of the program’s implementation. It also outlines the key features of Albany’s LEAD model (in particular, their multi-agency leadership approach which involves continuous communication between all partners post diversion), provides an overview of the goals for the project’s second year, and gives some background information and guiding principles behind LEAD.
