The George Washington Law Review and its co-sponsor, Dean Roger Fairfax of The George Washington University Law School, will hold a Fall Symposium marking the 50th Anniversary of President Lyndon B. Johnson’s Commission on Law Enforcement and Administration of Justice report “The Challenge of Crime in a Free Society.”
The report discussed issues confronting the criminal justice system at the time and provided recommendations to address the problems raised. Fifty years later, many of the same obstacles to an effective and fair justice system exist. The Symposium will examine essential issues of courts and procedure, technology, policing, corrections and sentencing, the War on Drugs, and juvenile justice. The focus will be on the future of the criminal justice system and what steps can be taken to achieve reform.
