Second Chance Alliance brings personal stories to the forefront

RALEIGH – Months of preparation culminated Tuesday when the North Carolina Second Chance Alliance and its supporters walked into the state legislature for the biannual Second Chance Lobby Day to lobby for numerous bills promoting opportunities for North Carolinians with criminal records.

Part of National Reentry Week, a variety of reforms are being considered in North Carolina, including a fair chance hiring policy, raising the age of criminal prosecution to 18, investments in reentry-focused programs in jails and prisons, increased access and eligibility for expungement of criminal records, expanded eligibility for certificates of relief to multiple convictions, decriminalization of drug addiction and increased treatment resources, and increased access to deferred prosecution programs.
