More than 70 million adults in the U.S. have a criminal record and more than one million youth acquire juvenile court records each year. These individuals are often impacted by collateral consequences of having a criminal record that hinder their attempts at gaining employment, housing, and even returning to school. However, record clearance enables a person’s criminal history information to be removed from easy public access and can help reduce some of these barriers for that individual. The National Association of Counties has partnered with The Council of State Governments Justice Center to host the Clean Slate Clearinghouse, a to help local and state policymakers compare their state’s record clearance policies to the national and regional landscapes and to learn about best practices. Webinar participants will learn about the issue of record clearance and how county policymakers can use the Clean Slate Clearinghouse to support their residents. They will also hear from two counties about the work they are doing in this area.
